As another example, 2-fluoromethyl-1,1,1,3,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butanol may be prepared by fluorinating commercially available 3-chloropropionic acid to form 1,1,1,3-tetrafluoropropane which may then be reacted with CHF2CF carbene to form 2-fluoromethyl-1,1,1,3,4,4-hexafluorobutane. The 2-fluoromethyl-1,1,1,3,4,4-hexafluorobutane may then be dehydrogenated and reacted with sulfuric acid and then water to form 2-fluoromethyl-1,1,1,3,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butanol.
