Procedure
A solution of 2-acetylamino-5-(4-aminophenylthio)thiazole (2.5 g) in a mixture of acetic acid (20 ml) and 6N-aqueous hydrochloric acid (5 ml) was refluxed for 4 hours with stirring. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and the solution was adjusted to pH 10 using 1N-aqueous sodium hydroxide with stirring under ice cooling. The precipitates were collected by filtration, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give 2-amino-5-(4-aminophenylthio)thiazole (1.70 g, yield: 81.5%).
