Procedure
A mixture of 2-acetylamino-5-(4-pyridylthio)thiazole (4.7 g), acetic acid (35 ml) and 6N-aqueous hydrochloric acid (10 ml) was refluxed for 2 hours with stirring. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in water. The solution was adjusted pH 8.5 using aqueous sodium bicarbonate under ice cooling. The precipitates were collected by filtration, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give 2-amino-5-(4-pyridylthio)thiazole (2.7 g, yield: 69.5%). mp: 180°-185° C. (dec.) IR (Nujol): 3270, 3150, 1630, 1580, 1380 cm-1
