To a mixture of 2,2-diphenylacetonitrile (135.77 g), 2-propynyl chloride (52.35 g) and tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate (0.51 g) was added dropwise 50% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (100 ml) at room temperature. After being stirred for 6 hours, the mixture was poured into water and extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was washed successively with diluted hydrochloric acid and brine, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was distilled in vacuo to give 2,2-diphenyl-2-(2-propynyl)acetonitrile.
