Procedure
37 g. of the ethyl ester of 3β-acetoxy-20-cyano-5,17(20)-pregnadiene-21-oic acid is mixed in 450 ml. of tetrahydrofuran and 150 ml. of ethanol with 2.5 g. of 10% palladium-charcoal catalyst and 2 ml. of N/10 sodium hydroxide solution and hydrogenated under normal pressure with hydrogen at room temperature. The reaction mixture is worked up as set forth in Example 1(b), thus obtaining the ethyl ester of 3β-acetoxy-20-cyano-5-pregnene-21-oic acid (34 g.), m.p. 170° C.
