Reaction of phenoxazine, 5,5-dimethyl-2-pyrrolidinone and phosphorus oxychloride according to the procedure of Example 1 provides the free base 10-(5,5-DIMETHYL-1-PYRROLIN-2-YL)-PHENOXAZINE, m.p. 148°-150°C. Conversion of the free base to the hydrochloride salt affords 10-(5,5-DIMETHYL-1-PYRROLIN-2-YL)PHENOXAZINE HYDROCHLORIDE, m.p. 239°-242.5°C. (corr.), in a 48% overall yield.
