Procedure
A solution of 8-(2-chloroethyl)-5,8 -dihydro-2-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-5-oxopyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-6-carboxylic acid (1.0 g) in 20 ml of a 10% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was heated at 95°C for three hours. The reaction mixture was then neutralized with hydrochloric acid under ice-cooling and chilled. The resulting precipitate was collected to give 0.63 g of the product. Recrystallization from a mixture of chloroform and ethanol gave the product as pure state.
