The polymer prepared in Example XIII above (110 g) is dissolved in 1100 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide and 100 g of benzyl chloride is added rapidly with stirring. After standing about 16 hours, the mixture is heated 2 hours on a steam bath. The product is precipitated in acetone, washed twice with acetone and dried under vacuum. The solid is redissolved in methanol, reprecipitated in dioxane, washed with acetone, and vacuum-dried to yield about 130 g of off-white solid.
