Procedure

A mixture of 53.5 g (0.2 moles) of α,α -diphenyl-4-piperidinemethanol, 41.5 g (0.22 mole) of 4-chloro-1-(2-thienyl)-1-butanone, 33.6 g (0.4 mole) of sodium bicarbonate and a small amount of potassium iodide in 1 liter of toluene was refluxed for 24 hours then filtered. The filtrate was cooled to room temperature, treated with charcoal, and filtered. The solvent was removed under vacuum and 500 ml of diethyl ether was added to dissolve the residue, followed by treatment with ethereal HCl. The resulting precipitate was recrystallized from methanolbutanone to give the desired product, M.P. 192.5°-193.5°C.
