Procedure
A mixture of 5.0 g (0.034 mole) of phthalic anhydride and 5.0 g (0.034 mole) of 2,5-dimethylindole in 30 ml of ethylene dichloride was refluxed for 20 hours, cooled and the separated solid filtered off and dried to obtain 3.8 g of 2-[(2,5-dimethyl-3-indolyl)carbonyl]benzoic acid (Formula VIII: Ro =R1 =R2 =R3 =R6 =H; R5 =CH3 ; Y1 =CH3) as a pink-colored solid melting at 198°-200° C.
