5-Chloro-3-(4-methoxybenzyl)-6,8-dimethylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine-4,7(3H,8H)-dione (8.75 g, 23.9 mmol, compound 8C) was dissolved in trifluoroacetic acid (15 mL) and subjected to microwave irradiation at 150° C. for 1 hour. TFA was evaporated in vacuo and the residue azeotroped with toluene (2×20 mL) then DCM (2×20 mL) to give 9.24 g of the title compound as a crude material which was used without further purification.
