To a solution of (E)-ethyl 2-(5-chloro-6-methoxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene)-2-cyanoacetate (Prep16, 6.02 g, 24.4 mmol) in ethanol (25 ml) was added a solution of KCN (3.61 g, 60 mmol) in water. The mixture was stirred for one day at 65-70° C. Water was added and extracted with ethyl acetate twice. The organic phases were combined and dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, concentrated and purified by FC to afford the title compound (800 mg, y=16%).
