A solution of Compound 3 (956 mg, 5.0 mmol) in formic acid (15 ml) was refluxed for 12 hours. To the reaction mixture, 24 ml of 28% NH4OH was added on an ice-cold bath. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with H2O and ethyl ether, and then dried at 60° C. for 12 hours to give 7-(2-thienyl)-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (970 mg, 96%).
