3-(3-Methoxyphenyl)-3-methylbutanoic acid 85.D (0.22 g, 1.1 mmol) was dissolved in MeOH (11 mL) and a catalytic amount (˜5 drops) of sulfuric acid was added. The solution was heated to reflux and stirred overnight. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and saturated sodium bicarbonate was added to neutralize the reaction. The mixture was then concentrated and the residue taken up in EtOAc and washed with water (2×30 mL), 1M lithium chloride solution (1×30 mL) and brine (1×30 mL) and dried over magnesium sulfate to give the desired product methyl 3-(3-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylbutanoate 85.E (0.227 g, 97% yield). MS ESI (pos.) m/e: 240.1 (M+H2O)+.
