0.8 g (0.007 mol) of fumaric acid is suspended in a solution of 30 ml of acetone and 0.3 ml of water. The suspension is brought to the boil, and 30 ml of a toluene solution containing 5.38 g (0.014 mol) of pure quetiapine base is added. The solution is refluxed for approximately 5 minutes, then cooled to a temperature of 0 to 5° C. and stirred at this temperature for 60 minutes. After being sucked off and dried, 5.7 g (0.013 mol) of quetiapine hemifumarate is obtained, i.e. 99.6% of the theory, having the HPLC purity 99.87%, and melting point 175.9° C.
