Procedure

To a solution of 1-benzyl 4-tert-butyl (2S,3S)-2-(dibenzylamino)-3-{2-hydroxy-3-[(methylsulfonyl)oxy]propyl}succinate from step 1k (5.02 g, 8.2 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) was added Pd-Black and 1M HCl (4 mL) solution. The mixture was hydrogenated under H2 at 50 psi overnight. The catalyst was filtered off and the solution was concentrated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in ethanol and triethyl amine (2 mL) was added. The solution was refluxed for three hours and then concentrated to dryness to provide the crude compound (2S,3S)-3-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-5-hydroxypiperidine-2-carboxylic acid, the compound was directly used in the next step. MS (ESI): 189.9 (M+H+-t-Bu); 246.0 (M+H+); 268.0 (M+Na+).
