HCl (8 mL) was added to a stirred solution of 4-(2-ethoxycarbonyl-acetyl)-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (5 g, 17 mmol) in dioxane (5.0 mL) at 0° C. and the resulting mixture stirred for 30 minutes. The mixture was then concentrated and the residue was washed with diethyl ether and dried to afford 4.1 g (82%) of 3-oxo-3-piperazin-1-yl-propionic acid ethyl ester hydrochloride. LCMS: 237.1 (M+1)+ 82%
