Procedure
Methanesulfonyl chloride (9.3 g) was added at 0° C. to a solution of methyl 3,5-dichloromandelate (19.0 g) and triethylamine (8.2 g) in dichloromethane (150 ml). After the addition, the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours, after which water (150 ml) was carefully added. The organic phase was separated, dried and concentrated to dryness, giving methyl 2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-mesyloxy-acetate (23.6 g) as an oil.
