A mixture of 4′-[(4-butyl-2-mercapto-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-5-yl)methyl]biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (2.3 g), iodomethane (0.54 mL), potassium hydroxide (0.44 g) and methanol (20 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 3 hr. The obtained crystallized product was collected by filtration and washed with water and diethyl ether to give the title compound as colorless crystals (1.98 g, 83%).
