To a solution of 4′-{[2-ethyl-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-oxo-4-propyl-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-5-yl]methyl}biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (26.2 g) in dichloromethane (100 mL) was added dropwise boron tribromide (1.0 M dichloromethane solution, 170 mL) at 0° C. After stirring for 18 hr, ethyl acetate and water were added, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound (22.1 g, 87%) as a colorless solid.
