Procedure
A mixture of 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl bromide (2.5 g, 10 mmol), 4-hydroxybenzyl cyanide (1.1 g, 8 mmol) and potassium carbonate (1.4 g, 10 mmol) in acetone (25 mL) was heated to reflux for 7 hours. The mixture was then diluted with H2O (100 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (2×150 mL). Organics portions were combined and washed with brine and then dried with Na2SO4. The mixture was then filtered and the solvent was removed in vacuo affording 2.5 g of crude product. Purification by flash chromatography eluting with 30 percent ether/pentane over silica gel yielded 2.2 g of a white solid.
