N-{[2-(Trifluoromethyl)phenyl]methyl}-4-piperidinecarboxamide (464 mg, 1.63 mmol, 1.00 equiv) was added to the suspension prepared in step b. The resulting mixture was heated to 40° C. and treated with 1 N NaOH to maintain a pH of 9-10. The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 h and then used immediately in the next step without workup or purification. MS (ES+): m/e 428.9 [M+H]+.
