To a solution of 4-(5-chloro-3-phenyl-1,6-naphthyridin-2-yl)benzaldehyde (9-1, 0.500 g, 1.450 mmol) in anhydrous methylene chloride (10 mL) was added methymagnesium bromide (2.072 mL, 2.9 mmol, 1.4M in toluene/tetrahydrofuran (75:25)) at 0° C. After 15 minutes, the reaction mixture was poured into ethyl acetate, and the organic layer was washed with a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate, water, then brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure gave the title compound. MS (M+H+): calculated=361.85, observed=361.1.
