Procedure

A solution of 5 grams (0.023 mole) of 4-((6-fluoro-2-pyridyl)thio)phenol and 2.72 grams (0.68 mole) of sodium hydroxide in 15 milliliters of water was heated at reflux for 21/2 hours. The resulting solution was poured over a mixture of ice and methylene chloride and the resulting mixture was vigorously stirred. The mixture was acidified by the dropwise addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The white crystalline solid 4-((6-hydroxy-2-pyridyl)thio)-phenol product which precipitated out was recovered by filtration and washed with methylene chloride. The product was recovered in a yield of 4.35 grams (88 percent of theoretical) and melted at 234°-238° C.
