A solution of 500 mg. (1 mmol.) of p-nitrobenzyl 6β-phenoxyacetamido-2,2-dimethylpenam-3-carboxylate-1-oxide and 134 mg. (1 mmol.) of N-chlorosuccinimide in 40 ml. of well dried 1,1,2-trichloroethane was refluxed for 90 minutes. The mixture was cooled, washed with water and brine, dried, and the solvent evaporated in vacuo. According to the nmr spectrum the title compound was obtained in nearly quantitative yield.
