Procedure
A mixture of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (8.4g, 100mM) and diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate (24.0g, 110mM) in glacial acetic acid (150ml) was heated under reflux for six hours. The resulting precipitated product was filtered and dried in vacuo. Yield 8.20g (36.6%). δ (DMSO-d6), 12.85 (1H,s, --OH), 8.87 (1H,s, H2), 8.56 (1H,s, H5), 4.38 (2H,q,--CH2CH3), 1.34 (3H,t, --CH2CH3); νmax (KBr disc) 1730 (ester C=O)cm-1 ; (Found: C, 45.99; H, 3.94; N, 27.29%. C8H8N4O3 requires C, 46.16; H, 3.87; N, 26.91%).
