Procedure
4 g Sodium is added with stirring and under a nitrogen atmosphere to a suspension of 0.5 g 2-methyl-9H-dibenzo[1,2;5,6]cyclohepta[3,4-c]pyridinium iodide (formula IV, melting point >300° C.) in 50 ml ethanol, after which the mixture is refluxed for 1 hour. The reaction mixture is then poured out into H2O and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic phase is washed with H2O, dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to dryness.
