Procedure
14 g (0.05 mole) of benzoin-2-chloroethyl ether are stirred with 75 g of diethylamine for 24 hours at 55° C. After cooling, the reaction mixture is diluted with ether and extracted with dilute hydrochloric acid. The aqueous layer is made alkaline with K2CO3 and extracted with ether. The ether layer is washed with ice water, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residual oil is dried in a high vacuum.
