To a solution of 1 g of Compound (1a) in 30 ml of ethyl acetate is added 3.3 ml of a 1.66 N solution of chlorine in carbon tetrachloride, and the mixture reacted at room temperature for 10 minutes, treated with 0.21 ml of pyridine, and purified by chromatography on a column of silica gel to yield 454 mg of Compound (7) as main product and Compound (8) as by-product.
