Under a nitrogen atmosphere a solution of 9.5 g of Boc-L-phenylalanyl-1-aminoadamantane in 25 ml of cold, dry dichloromethane is diluted with 25 ml of trifluoroacetic acid. The reaction is allowed to proceed for 45 minutes then the solution is concentrated and 50 ml of methylene chloride is added. The solution is washed with 25 ml portions of ice cold water, 2 M potassium carbonate solution, and saturated sodium chloride solution then dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is rubbed with ethyl ether and the solid isolated and dried over potassium hydroxide under reduced pressure to give L-phenylalanyl-1-aminoadamantane which is represented by the following formula ##STR33##
