Into a 100 ml, one neck flask is placed 10 grams of sodium methyl maleate, 60 mls N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and 40 grams nitroethane. The solution is heated at 60° C. for two hours and then partially distilled in vacuo to remove the DMF and nitroethane.
