Procedure
A mixture of AlCl3 (8.0 g, 60 mmole) and LiAlH4 (6.8 g, 180 mmole) was prepared in Et2O (600 ml) as described above. To this was added 5c (21.3 g, 60 mmole) in Et2O (1 L) and the mixture refluxed for 36 hours. Processing as described gave a foam. Crystals of 6c (10.0 g) as the CHCl3 solvate, mp 104°-108°, were obtained from CHCl3 -hexane. An additional 2.7 g of 6c (50% overall yield) was obtained by processing the mother liquor.
