Procedure

To a solution of 1,1-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)-3-phenyl-1H-indene (1.0 g, 2.7 mmol) in dichloromethane was added methanesulfonic acid (5.4 mmol, 0.52 g, 03.5 ml). The solvent was evaporated and the residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate/isopropanol to give white crystals, 0.8 g, m.p. >250°.
