The 5-methylindole 1a is benzoylated with benzoyl chloride of a substituted benzoic acid to give N-benzoyl-5-methylindole, 1b. The bromination of 1b with N-bromosuccinimide and a catalytic amount of azobisisobutyronitrile in refluxing carbon tetrachloride affords N-benzoyl-5-bromomethylindole, 1c. ##STR43##
