Reaction Steps
4.8 g (31.5 mmol) of mandelic acid and 10.4 g (30 mmol) of 1-hexadecylethylphenol are heated together at 190°-200° C. for approx. 8 hours under reduced pressure (13.3 mbar). In the course of this the water formed in the reaction is removed by distillation. When the reaction is complete, the reaction product is filtered over silica gel (hexane) and is then treated with cold hexane. The product has a melting point of 60°-62° C. and is in the form of a white powder. The yield is 7 g (=50% of theory).
