Procedure

Combine (+)-3-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)-3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-pyrrolidine (R, R)-di-p-anisoyltartaric acid salt (0.14 g, 0.21 mmol) ethyl acetate (15 mL, acetonitrile (6 mL), water, (6 mL) and sodium bicarbonate (0.09 g, 1.03 mmol). Cool to 0° C. in an ice-salt bath. Add trimethoxybenzoyl chloride (0.048 g, 0.21 mmol). After 30 minutes, warm to ambient temperature. After 30 minutes at ambient temperature, partition the reaction mixture between ethyl acetate and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution. Extract the organic layer with 1M hydrochloric acid solution, then saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. Dry the organic layer over MgSO4, filter, and evaporate in vacuo to give the title compound: Rf =0.11 (silica gel, ethyl acetate).
