A solution of boron trichloride (1 ml of 1 mol/L solution in dichloromethane) in dichloromethane (2 ml) was added to a stirred solution of 2-(2,4-dimethoxy-phenoxy)-benzoic acid methyl ester (0.364 g) in dichloromethane (15 ml) under ice bath. The solution was stirred for 20 min and then stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The solution was carefully poured into ice water and the crude product was extracted with dichloromethane, washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered and evaporated by a rotary evaporator to obtain the product, which was purified by column chromatography.
