To a solution of 3-(1H-indol-3-yl)-3-oxo-propionitrile (6.4 g, 34.7 mmol, 1.0 eq), in absolute EtOH (40 mL), hydrazine monohydrate (5.0 mL, 104.1 mmol, 3.0 eq) was added and the reaction was heated at reflux for 24 hours. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature; the solid was filtered and washed with Et2O/EtOAc 10/1 to give 3.0 g of title product (yield 74%).
