A mixture of the above described (2SR,6SR)-4-benzenesulfonyl-1-benzyl-2,6-bis-methoxymethyl-piperazine (2.355 g, 5.82 mmol) in ethanol (300 ml) with 10% palladium on carbon (620 mg, 10 mol %) was hydrogenated at 50° C. for 2 h. The catalyst was filtered off, washed with ethanol, the filtrate was evaporated totally and dried in high vacuum to give the title compound as a white solid (1.74 g, 95%), MS (ISP) m/e=315.0 [(M+H)+].
