Procedure

4-trifluoromethyl-benzene-1,2-diamine (0.5 g, 2.84 mmol) and 1,1′-thiocarbonyldiimidazole (0.84 g, 4.73 mmol) in 5 ml of tetrahydrofuran are stirred at room temperature for 48 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue is dissolved in 10 ml ethyl acetate and washed with water (2×3 ml). The organic phase is dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is then purified on a silica gel column (32 g) eluted with dichloromethane. The fractions containing the expected product are concentrated under reduced pressure to yield 400 mg of 2-mercapto-6-trifluoromethyl-1H-benzimidazole. Yield=65%. Analytical LC/MS (method B): retention time=3.14 min., m/z=218.98 (positive ion mode).
