Procedure

A mixture of 4-methoxy-2-nitrobenzenamine (8 g, 47.62 mmol), 5-bromo-2-nitropyridine (7.2 g, 35.47 mmol), and potassium 2-methylpropan-2-olate (6 g, 53.57 mmol) in DMF (180 ml) was allowed to stir for 5 hours at 30° C. and overnight at 60° C. After being cooled down to room temperature, the reaction mixture was quenched by the addition of H2O (200 mL) and the resulting solution was extracted three times with 400 ml of EtOAc, washed with 200 ml of H2O and 200 ml of brine. The mixture was dried and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude material such obtained was purified by solvating gas chromatography (SGC) using 1:10-1:5 EtOAc/PE as eluents to provide 800 mg (5%) of (5-Bromo-pyridin-2-yl)-(4-methoxy-2-nitro-phenyl)-amine (z) as a red solid.
