Procedure

0.3 g (1.07 mmol) of N-(2-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethyl)phthalimide was dissolved in 10 ml of absolute tetrahydrofuran and, at 0° C., admixed dropwise with a 1 M solution of 0.14 g (1.6 mmol) of 2-thienyllithium. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature, after which stirring was continued for 2 h, and the mixture was then admixed with 10 ml of saturated ammonium chloride solution. The mixture was extracted three times with diethyl ether and the combined organic phases were washed once with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried and evaporated to dryness using a rotary evaporator. The oily crude product was purified by chromatography. Elution was carried out using a dichloromethanelmethanol gradient (0 to 1% methanol). Yield: 0.2 g of an oil.
