Procedure

To a solution of ethanol (50 mL) and phthalimide 18 (1.8 g, 3.7 mmol) was added 40% aqueous methylamine (25 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 16 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vaczio and then chromatographed on silica gel to provide hydroxylamine 19 (0.5 g; 15% from 16). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 6.92 (s, 2H), 6.79 (s, 1H), 5.92 (bs, 1H), 5.40 (s, 2H), 5.17 (m, 2H), 4.04 (t, 2H), 3.88-4.03 (m, 3H), 3.82 (t, 2H), 3.88-4.03 (m, 3H), 3.82 (t, 2H), 2.01-2.12 (m, 2H), 1.4-1.9 (m, 8H).
