Procedure

A suspension of ethyl 6-amino-5-(2,4-dichlorobenzylamino)nicotinate (300 mg) and acetic acid (132 mg) in polphosphoric acid (6 g) was heated to 100° C. Two hours later, the reaction mixture was cooled and ice (5 g) was added. The mixture was neutralized with a saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate and extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous sulfate and filtrated. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue was crystallized from isopropyl ether to give the objective compound (288 mg) as pale-brown crystals.
