Procedure

5α-Pregn-2-ene-11,20-dione (10 g) in benzene (300 ml) was treated with ethylene glycol (30 ml) and toluene-4-sulphonic acid (100 mg), and the vigorously stirred mixture was refluxed through a Dean and Stark separator for 8 hours. The reaction mixture was partitioned between ether/ethyl acetate and dilute sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was washed with water (3 times), dried over sodium sulphate and evaporated to a solidifying oil which was triturated with petrol to give title compound (9.42 g) as an off-white solid, m.p. 130°-135°, [α]D +111°.
