Procedure
72 g of solid sodium borohydried are added, a little at a time, to a stirred solution of 600 g of 2,3-dimethyl-4-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-8-phenoxy-octan-3-ol in 1,000 ml of methanol; during the addition, the mixture reaches the refluxing temperature. When the exothermic reaction has subsided, the mixture is evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. 500 ml of water are added to the residue and the batch is extracted three times with 300 ml of methylene chloride at a time. The combined organic phases are dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered, and the filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure. 200 ml of diisopropyl ether are added to the residue, and 360 g of colorless crystals, of melting point 79°-81° C., are isolated from this mixture.
