Procedure
The reactant benzyl dichloromethyl sulfoxide was prepared by dissolving 15.4 grams (g) of benzyl dichloromethyl sulfide in 100 milliliters (ml) of methylene chloride. The solution was cooled in an ice-bath and 15 g of 85% 3-chloroperbenzoic acid was added. After stirring overnight at room temperature, the solution was washed with a 5% solution of potassium carbonate. It was then dried and the solvent evaporated, yielding 15.5 g of solid white benzyl dichloromethyl sulfoxide (m.p. 84°-90° C.). Structure was confirmed by infrared spectraphotometric analysis (IR), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum (NMR).
