A mixture of 20 parts of ethyl 4-[N-(2-chlorophenyl)-N-(phenylacetyl)amino]-1-piperidinecarboxylate and 300 parts of hydrobromic acid solution 48% is stirred and refluxed for 1h. 10. The hydrobromic acid solution 48% is removed in vacuo and to the residue is added successively water and sodium hydroxide solution. The free base is extracted with trichloromethane. The latter is dried and evaporated. The solid residue is washed with 1,1'-oxybisethane and dried, yielding 10.6 parts of N-(2-chlorophenyl)-N-(4-piperidinyl)benzeneacetamide; mp. 135.5° C.
