Pyridine (2.2 ml.) is added to a suspension of 5,6,7,8,9,10-hexahydro-2-hydroxy-3-(1-methyl-4-phenylbutyl)-6,6-dimethyl-10-oxobenzo[c]quinoline (250 mg., 0.642 mmole) in 2.2 ml. of acetic anhydride under a nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture is stirred for 1.5 hours at room temperature and then poured onto ice (50 ml.). The mixture is extracted with ether, the extracts washed with water (4×50 ml.) and brine (1×60 ml.), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated under reduced pressure.
