Procedure
A mixture of 5 g. of the product of step A in 50 ml. of 30 percent sodium hydroxide solution and 20 ml. of ethanol is heated at its reflux temperature for 30 minutes, and 75 ml. of water is added. The solution is heated at its reflux temperature for three hours, then poured into 125 ml. of 6 N hydrochloric acid. The solid is separated by filtration and recrystallized from acetic acid to provide 3-(4-carboxyphenyl)benzofuran-5-acetic acid, m.p. 278°-281° C.
